Unattended Candle Sited As Cause In Spencer House Fire

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– Minor damage was reported Thursday in a house fire in Spencer.

Firefighters were called to 812 West Fifth Street shortly before 3:00 p.m.

Spencer Fire Chief Doug Duncan says crews found the house full of smoke and a fire burning in a bedroom. Duncan says they were able to quickly extinguish the blaze.

Fire damage was contained to some clothing and a dresser in the bedroom. Light smoke damage was reported to the rest of the house. Duncan says the door to the room was closed, which may have prevented the fire from spreading to the rest of the house.

Duncan says no one was home at the time the fire broke out. He says the occupant returned to find a smoke alarm going off and contacted authorities.

The State Fire Marshall determined the cause was accident…siting a burning candle that had been left unattended in the bedroom was the source of the fire.

No injuries were reported.
