Two Northwest Iowa Schools To Share In Grant

November 23, 2014

(Undated)– Spencer and Estherville-Lincol Central are among 14 school districts in Iowa that will share in a 21 million dollar grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

The money will fund a five-year project involving thousands of junior high and high school students. The Iowa State University program helps students in those age brackets avoid substance abuse and other social problems.

Partnership teams will be developed in half the schools to identify needs and offer programs to improve the health and well-being of students. In seven other districts, local teams will receive technical assistance to implement similar programs.

Project director Richard Spoth says few other programs have been scientifically evaluated and fewer have proven effective.
