(Emmetsburg)– Charges have been filed against two people in connection with a high speed chase Friday night in Palo Alto county.
Authorities say a Palo Alto County Sheriff’s deputy stopped a vehicle driven by William Asberry on Highway four about a mile north of Highway 18. After the vehicle was stopped, Asberry allegedly took off at a high rate of speed southbound on Highway four. Asberry then created a cloud of dust in the intersection of two gravel roads. One of the deputies involved in the pursuit, Lynn Schultes, came to the intersection and was unable to see a deadend due to the dust cloud. He crashed his patrol car.
Authorities say Asberry continued on gravel roads until reaching Highway 314. He then went north and was met by another deputy who deployed stop sticks…deflating a tire on the vehicle Asberry was driving. Asberry still continued on…turning west onto Highway 18 where he came to a stop east of Ruthven.
Asberry was taken into custody following a brief struggle. He was taken to the Palo Alto County Jail and charged with O-W-I fourth offense, driving while barred, eluding, and several misdemeanor traffic offenses.
Jay McDermott, a passenger in the vehicle Asberry was driving, was arrested on a Dickinson county warrant for assault. McDermott was taken to the Palo Alto County Jail and was later released to Dickinson county authorities.
Deputy Schultes was taken by a fellow deputy to the Palo Alto County Hospital where he was treated for neck and shoulder injuries and released.
