(Spirit Lake)– A November 29th trial date has been set for a Spirit Lake woman accused of misspending more than 400-thousand dollars from the Before and After School Services, or BASS Program.
A report from the State Auditor says Meg Waltz allegedly used the money to purchase personal items. Her attorney, Jim Clarity, has entered a written plea of not guilty on her behalf.
Waltz will stand trial on one count of ongoing criminal conduct…a class “B” felony…and one count of first degree theft…a class “C” felony.
The investigation came at the request of the Iowa Department of Human Services, which awarded the BASS Program more than 600-thousand dollars in grants from July 1st, 2000 through December 31st, 2004.
Waltz is currently free after posting a 45,500-dollar bond and is back at work as the BASS Program’s Executive Director.
The Spirit Lake school board recently voted to continue it’s agreement for services with BASS on a month-by-month basis for now atleast.
