(Emmetsburg)– The Fourth of July Holiday weekend in Emmetsburg was marred by a drowning in Five Island Lake.
Authorities say 36-year-old Robert John McCartan of rural Emmetsburg was participating in a “try-athlon” during Saturday’s 3rd of July Celebration when he problems swimming. He was pulled from the lake, but resuscitation efforts by physicians and E-M-T’s were unsuccessful.
McCartan was pronounced dead a short time later at Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg.
