Survey Results Leave No Clear Concensus On Courthouse Issue

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Dickinson county supervisors were hoping the latest survey on what should be done about the courthouse would give them a clear concensus as to what atleast 60 percent of the population would support in a bond issue.

They didn’t get that.

Results were presented to the public Tuesday evening by Vern Ryan of Iowa State University, who conducted the survey. 394 out of 600 surveys randomly sent to registered voters in the county were returned for a 70 percent response. Ryan says that gives a high confidence level to the results.

The only clear deduction from the survey was on the location of the courthouse. 68 percent of respondents support keeping it on the present site or adjacent to it. Otherwise, responses to other questions dealing with what should be done to the building when it comes to remodeling and/or new construction, what a project should cost, and other factors, drew responses well below the 60 percent majority supervisors hoped for.

Supervisor Chairman David Gottsche says they’ll meet at 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 24th to review the results further and maybe start hammering out some sort of a compromised plan.
