(Spirit Lake)– Don’t look for Dickinson county to contribute anytime soon to a study going on in several lakes area cities looking into the feasibility of establishing a municipally-owned telecommunications system.
It was the concensus of the board of supervisors earlier this week for the county NOT to contribute to the study.
Assistant County Attorney Lonnie Saunders, who’s been researching the legality of the county contributing, told the supervisors the issue is very murky. He says it’s his understanding of Iowa Code that the county would not be required to have a vote before contributing to the study. But Saunders says it’s his feeling the county would gain little by contributing since the cities involved would be able to extend service to unincorporated subdivisions just outside their city limits.
The supervisors have been looking at the possibility of contributing after one of them was approached by one of the cities involved in the study.
