(Spirit Lake)– It was a rainy summer in the Iowa Great Lakes, but still not nearly as wet as it was in 1993, which was an all-time record setter for rainfall.
According to statistics compiled here at the KUOO studios, rainfall for June, July and August, the months that make up meteorlogical summer, consisted of 17.08 inches here at the studios. That pales in comparison to the 26.52 inches that fell those same three months back in 1993.
Here’s a breakdown in the comparisons: for June, 2010, 6.50 inches fell, compared to 10.73 inches in 1993; in July, 7.53 inches of rain was recorded, compared to 9.48 inches in July of 1993; and in August, 3.05 inches of rain fell here at the studios, compared to 6.31 inches in August of 1993.
On a statewide basis, 1993 also remains the wettest on record with a statewide average of 26.83 inches. State Climatologist Harry Hillaker says rainfall this summer average 23.23 inches. That once again is for the months of June, July and August.
The three-month total of just over 17 inches here at the KUOO studios is considerably lower than that as we missed out on some extremely heavy rains that fell in portions of central and southern Iowa in late July and last month.
