Students Walk Out After Some Homecoming Events Are Canceled

November 23, 2014

(Spencer)– About a hundred Spencer High School students walked out of classes Friday after some homecoming festivities were canceled.

The decision to call off a tug-of-war and powder puff football and volleyball games was made during a meeting of school administrators and student council members. School officials say appropriate people weren’t contacted and deadlines weren’t met…resulting in the decision to call off the activities.

After the announcement was made, a group of seniors distributed slips of paper encouraging students to “show their school pride” and walk out of classes. At about 12:30 p.m. Friday, 92 students did just that…which school officials say, was a violation of truancy policy. Those students will now have to attend Saturday school to make up for the lost time.

One of the students that distributed the paper said it was meant as a joke and didn’t think anyone would actually follow through with it.
