(Spirit Lake)– No serious damage was reported locally as the result of severe thunderstorms that hit the area Monday evening. The Dickinson County Communications Center received scattered reports of power outages…especially from the Lake Park area.
The heaviest storms moved through the region between 7:00 and 9:30 p.m. producing torrential downpours, sharp lightning, gusty wind and hail. Wind gusts up to 60 miles-per-hour were reported in some areas. A peak gust of 50 miles-per-hour was recorded at the KUOO studios. There were numerous reports of hail ranging from pea-size to dime-size.
82 one-hundredths of an inch of rain fell at the KUOO studios; Estherville had three-quarters of-an-inch; and Jackson, Minnesota had 88-one-hundredths.
The storms followed several days of extreme heat and humidity. Monday’s high in Spirit Lake topped out at 96 degrees.
