Stevens Takes Issue With Newspaper Quote

November 23, 2014

(Des Moines)– State Representative Greg Stevens of Milford says a quote he gave to a newspaper was taken out of context.

It appears in a column in Tuesday’s Des Moines Register. It refers to a comment Stevens made to a publisher of another newspaper on whether or not academic standards should be raised for athletes. Stevens was quoted as saying that he was upset a failing grade he gave to a wrestler was changed to a better one so the student athlete could continue competing. Stevens admits to making the comment, but he says it did NOT happen at Okoboji…where he’s currently a high school teacher. Stevens says the incident took place when he was teaching in South Dakota. He said the incident greatly upset him and he left that school district as a result.

Stevens says such an incident would never take place at Okoboji.
