State Senator David Johnson Wants New License Plates

November 22, 2014

(Des Moines)– An Iowa lawmaker says it’s time to spruce up the state’s blue-and-white license plates.

Senator David Johnson of Ocheyedan has introduced a bill that would require the transportation department to issue new tags every five years, starting in 2007.

Johnson says he got the idea from a constituent who told him about a similar law in South Dakota.

Johnson says new tags are a way to market the state, and it’s not “the same old plate over and over again.”

Iowa’s current tags were first issued in 1997. They’re white, blue and gray and show a farmstead and two silos with a city skyline in the background.

For an extra charge, Iowans can choose from about 40 specialty plates, including in the colors of the state’s three universities.
