State Patrol Issues School Bus Safety Reminder

November 23, 2014

(Spencer)– Now that all area schools are back in session, the Iowa State Patrol is reminding drivers of school bus safety.

Joe Thompson of the Iowa State Patrol says drivers need to be especially alert for school buses in the mornings and afternoons.

Thompson reminds motorists to slow down and never pass a bus that has its amber warning lights flashing. It’s also illegal to pass a bus that has it’s red lights flashing and the stop-arm extended.

Trooper Thompson says most of the problems begin when drivers are distracted while going to or coming from work.

Laws pertaining to school buses are applicable on private roads or driveways, as well as public streets and highways.

If you encounter an unsafe driver around a school bus you are asked to call the Iowa State Patrol’s hotline at 1-800-525-5555.
