(Spirit Lake)– A Spirit Lake woman is 500-dollars richer thanks to the Kiwanis car that finally fell through the ice on Smith’s Bay over the weekend.
Colleen Frederick of Spirit Lake came the closest to guessing when the car would go through. Her guess was 4:30 p.m. Saturday, April 6th. A clock that was in the car stopped at 9:43 p.m. Saturday. The clock was rigged to stop about 10 minutes after getting wet.
The car went down in about 10 feet of water. The ice surrounding it was still about five to six inches thick. Officials say it was the ice directly below the car that melted and gave way.
The car was brought up Sunday afternoon by the Arnolds Park/Okoboji Underwater Search and Rescue Crew and Bob’s Tow and Repair of Spirit Lake.
