Spirit Lake Native Helping In Search And Rescue Near “Ground Zero”

November 23, 2014

(Manhattan, N.Y.)– “The corner of hell and armageddon”. That’s how Spirit Lake native and New York city resident Kent Tritle describes the site of where the world trade center used to stand. Tritle is experiencing firsthand the horrendous damage and carnage that took place at that site on Tuesday. He’s driving a truck for the American Red Cross loaded with various supplies for triage units. He’s based about three blocks away from what’s become known as “ground zero”.

Tritle says it’s hard to put into words what it’s actually like there. He says it’s like something from a very bad horror movie.

Tritle says he was in his apartment when he heard the first plane crash. He went out onto the street after the second one crashed. He then went to his church and assisted volunteers at a grammar school in trying to calm the children. Tritle says once the children were sent home, he and other volunteers went to the local Red Cross chapter. And that he’s been helping them ever since.

Tritle says today’s visit to the scene by President Bush complicated search and rescue units because of extremely tight security.

As of mid-morning, when KUOO news visited with Tritle at the scene via cell phone, no additional victims had been pulled alive from the rubble in the area where he’s been working.

Tritle says while they’re in need of items such as socks, sweatshirts, rain gear, and medical supplies, what they need the most is money.

And, Tritle says, there’s something else you can do to help out: pray.
