Spirit Lake Men Charged For Allegedly Giving False Info. To Officers

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Two Spirit Lake men have been charged for allegedly giving false information to law enforcement officers.

Spirit Lake police say it stems from a report they received early Sunday of a one vehicle rollover in the 1100 block of 10th Street. Authorities say the vehicle, a 2001 GMC, had been eastbound on 10th Street when the driver apparently lost control. The vehicle went into the south ditch where it struck a ditch or embankment and rolled onto the passenger’s side. Officials found no one around the vehicle and an attempt to locate its owner, Doug Allen Petersen of Spirit Lake, was unsuccessful.

The vehicle was totaled.

Police say later that morning Petersen filed a report stating his vehicle had been stolen.

Upon investigating, authorities say Petersen admitted that was NOT the case, and that he had been operating the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Petersen was arrested around 5:00 a.m. Monday at the Spirit Lake Police Department and charged with making false reports to law enforcement and failure to maintain control. He was booked into the Dickinson county jail.

Shad William Seufert of Spirit Lake, who authorities say was a passenger in the vehicle Petersen had been driving and was with him at the time he filed the report, was also charged with making false reports to law enforcement.

Spirit Lake police were assisted in their investigation by the Okoboji Police Department.
