Spirit Lake Man Charged With Attempted Murder Pleads Guilty To Lesser Charges In Plea Deal

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A Spirit Lake man accused of trying to kill a woman at a Spirit Lake residence last year has reached a plea agreement in the case.

On line court documents show 22-year-old Jeffrey Wittler has pleaded guilty to one count each of willful injury and going armed with intent in exchange for a more serious charge of attempted murder being dropped.

Sentencing is set for May 24th.

The written pleas were entered today (Wednesday) in Dickinson County District Court. Judge David Lester set sentencing for May 24th. Wittler has been ordered held without bond in the meantime.

The original charges against Wittler stemmed from an incident on June 1st, 2009 when Spirit Lake police were called to a report of an assault at 2321 Quail Run in Spirit Lake. The injured woman was taken to Lakes Regional Healthcare and was transferred to a Sioux Falls hospital.

Trial for Wittler was to start this coming Tuesday in Dickinson County District Court.
