Spirit Lake High School Evacuated

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Spirit Lake High School was evacuated this (Tues.) afternoon as the result of a threat.

That word this (Tues.) evening from Superintendent Tim Grieves.

Grieves tells KUOO news the building was evacuated and locked down at 2:41 p.m. after more than one student reported a possible threat that had been made by another student stating that “something would happen at school today”, making reference to the tragedy at Columbine High School.

Law enforcement and school officials began a thorough search of the building. A bomb squad dog also searched the building and found no explosive devices.

The school will open for students at 8:00 a.m. Wednesday with additional security and police on hand. Early bird PE and all before-school activities are cancelled Wednesday morning. High School staff will report at 7:30 a.m. to Room 325 and will only be allowed to enter the southeast door by the Media Center or the north door. Students will arrive at 8:00 a.m. through two entrances–the southeast door by the Media Center and the door directly east of the office. Students will go immediately to their lockers and directly to their first period classrooms for further information. The only doors open during the day will be the southeast doors by the Media Center and the east doors by the office.

A news release goes on to say the action was taken to ensure the safety of all students in the high school, and that police and school officials have determined the building is safe for school on Wednesday.

Grieves says the incident remains under investigation.

Parents with concerns may contact Grieves at 336-2820 or Principal Sheryl Hall at 336-3707, extension 1000.

Grieves declined to release any additional information other than what was included in the news release.
