Spirit Lake Firefighters Respond To Smoke Report

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake Fire Department was called out late this (Thurs.) morning to a report of smoke coming from a horse barn.

Fire Chief Wally Jorgenson says they were called to the Mark and Karen Byers residence at 1448 240th Avenue. Jorgenson says an investigation determined the smoke was coming from a heating element in a water tank heater.

Other than a timber that had burned off one side and some smoke, Jorgenson says there was no damage to the metal barn. A horse that had been in the barn was got out unharmed.

Jorgenson says it’s fortunate the fire was discovered in its early stage or it would have been much worse as there was a lot of hay in the structure. A passerby spotted the smoke and called authorities.

The Spirit Lake Fire Department was on the scene about a half hour.

No injuries were reported.
