Spirit Lake City Council Re-Visits ATV Ordinance

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Updates to state statutes have the city of Spirit Lake re-visiting its all-terrain-vehicle ordinance.

Assistant City Attorney Greg Owens told the council Tuesday that under a new statutory provision from the state, the city would need to apply for permits from the state to allow the machines to cross highways at specific intersections. Until the city does that, Owens says it is illegal for ATV’s to cross Highways.

The council directed the city’s Police Chief and Public Works Director to identify possible crossing areas.

Currently, ATV’s can only be operated on certain streets in Spirit Lake during the winter months–the same as snowmobiles. But the council may be re-visiting that portion of the ordinance as well. An employee of Polaris Industries addressed the council Tuesday, requesting ATV’s also be allowed to be operated on city streets during the warmer months as well.
