(Spencer)– The city of Spencer is reminding residents of an ordinance requiring grass and weeds be no more than eight inches in height on private property and on the public right-of-ways adjacent to their land. Exceptions are natural or wooded areas, native prairies or land used for agricultural purposes. Those with a portion or all of their land being used for one or more of those uses should contact city hall for assistance with the application process.
City officials say violators of the ordinance can expect to find a sign posted on the property giving notice of the violation. If after seven days the violation hasn’t been taken care of, the city will have a contractor mow the property at the owner’s expense. If the charge isn’t paid within 30 days, the charge will be certified with the county and collected with property taxes.
City officials add that mowing is the only way to control grasses along right-of-ways. The use of fire or herbicides isn’t allowed.
Anyone with questions should contact Spencer city hall at 580-7200 or by email at spencer@smu.net.
