Spencer Man Pleads Guilty To Federal Drug Charges

(Sioux City)– A Spencer man has pled guilty to drug charges in U.S. District Court in Sioux City.

55-year-old Gary Brooks entered the plea to one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine within a thousand feet of a playground and one count of possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute and aiding and abetting the possession with intent to distribute meth within a thousand feet of a playground.

At a plea hearing earlier this week, Brooks admitted that in April of 2008 he conspired with others to bring methamphetamine from Las Vegas, Nevada to Storm Lake. Court documents say Brooks met with co-conspirators in a parking lot within a thousand feet of Awaysis Park in Storm Lake. Brooks was arrested as he left Storm Lake and methamphetamine was found in his vehicle as well as in a motel room in Storm Lake.

Sentencing for Brooks will be scheduled once a pre-sentence report is complete. He remains on pre-trial release supervision in the meantime.

Brooks faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment and not more than life imprisonment, along with an eight million dollar fine and 10 years up to life of supervised release following any imprisonment.

The case was investigated by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Spencer Police Department, Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol and the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement.
