(Spencer)– The K-Mart store in Spencer is one of four stores in Iowa the company plans to close as part of its restructuring under chapter 11 bankruptcy. The other stores to close in Iowa are in Des Moines, Fort Dodge and Clinton.
Kathy Fueston of the Spencer Chamber of Commerce tells KUOO news they pleaded with corporate officials to keep the Spencer store open, but it was to no avail.
Bob Rose of the Spencer Main Street Program says the city now has two major retail voids to fill. It’s been about a year since Shopko closed its doors for good in Spencer.
Rose says they’ve been actively working to try to find another retailer to move in…but have had little luck so far.
K-Mart has been in Spencer since the mid 1970’s.
K-Mart employs about about 65 people at its Spencer store. Company officials say some associates will be given the opportunity to transfer to other stores.
A federal bankruptcy court must approve of the store closures.
