(Spencer)– A two-vehicle crash Wednesday evening in Spencer has claimed the life of a Royal teen.
Police say 16-year-old Katherine Mason of Royal was eastbound on Highway 18 near Del’s Garden Center and 43-year-old Michael O. Hanson of Spencer was westbound when the two collided.
Authorities say Mason, who was driving a 1984 Mercury, either turned left in front of the 1997 Ford pickup Hanson was driving or crossed the centerline and was struck by Hanson.
Hanson was taken by ambulance to Spencer Municipal Hospital for treatment of undisclosed injuries. Mason was also taken to Spencer Municipal Hospital and was transferred by air to Mercy Hospital in Sioux City with undisclosed injuries.
14-year-old Nicole Lucas of Royal, a passenger in the vehicle Mason was driving, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The mishap, which took place shortly after 8:00 p.m., remains under investigation.
The Spencer Police Department was assisted by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Patrol.
