Spencer Council Gives Greenlight To Downtown Rennovation

November 23, 2014

(Spencer)– Spencer’s downtown rennovation project has the green light to proceed.

At a special meeting Thursday evening, the council voted six to one in favor of proceeding with the project along Grand Avenue.

Prior to the vote, the council approved an amendment to the assessment schedule. City Manager Dean Torresen says the total budget for the project will remain at about 3.375 million dollars. The council action will result in the amount of the special assessments being reduced by about 50 percent from what was originally proposed. The special assessments will total about 350-thousand dollars, compared to the original 606-thousand. Torresen says the assessments were lowered to help ease the burden on business owners.

The lone dissenting vote against the project was cast by councilman Jim Roling, who says he is in favor of the project, but he doesn’t believe it was fair to those who have to help pay for it.
