Spencer Council Discusses Public Works Assistant

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– One topic on the agenda created dissension among city councilmen during Monday’s Spencer city council meeting.

It was over a proposal to change an existing position in the Public Works Department.

The city’s Personnel and Finance Committee and Public Works Committee have recommended that a Computer-aided Drafting or CAD position be changed to a Public Works Assistant. The Assistant title would have broadened job responsibilities to include computer-aided drafting, serving as a back-up Zoning Administrator, along with increased managerial and administrative duties within the Public Works Department.

The CAD Technician position has been vacant since August, 2003. City Manager Dean Torreson told the council Monday the current position needs to change in its scope to better meet the needs of the public and the department.

When the measure came up for a vote, councilmen Steve Waller and Randy Swanson both voted against the resolution, leaving the final vote five-to-two.
