(Spencer)– The Spencer City Council Monday approved the first filing of a rezoning request for Menards.
The company wants to build a 162-thousand square foot building on 16 to 17 acres of land south of the Hy-Vee store in south Spencer. The company is requesting the land be rezoned to C-2 Highway commercial.
In other business, the council discussed the future of 12 billboards along Highway Boulevard in north Spencer. The signs are on city property.
A five year agreement with the owner of the signs, Avery Sign Company, has expired. The city’s Progress and Development Committee has recommended the city not renew the lease and that the signs be removed. They believe replacing the signs with trees would beautify the city’s north entrance.
Some business owners that occupy those signs spoke out against the removal, citing a need to let drivers know where certain businesses are located in Spencer.
After nearly an hour of discussion, the issue was sent back to the Progress and Development Committee for further discussion. That meeting is set for June 2nd.
