(Spencer)– Leaf burning may soon be banned inside Spencer city limits.
The city council Monday discussed an open burning ordinance for the first time.
City Manager Dean Torreson told the council the Public Safety Committee has recommended the council adopt an ordinance that would prohibit open burning under most circumstances.
Torreson says Spencer is one of the largest cities in Iowa that does not restrict open burning.
Spencer Fire Chief says the request for the ban is coming from some asthmatic citizens concerned about their health.
Duncan says the ordinance under consideration would ban the burning of yard waste, garbage or refuse. Things such as “ceremonial fires”, prescribed burns and incinerators would be exempt.
The council unanimously approved the first reading of the proposed ordinance Monday.
The Spirit Lake city council has set June 1st at 6:00 p.m. as the date and time for a public hearing to gather pros and cons on banning open burning. The meeting will be held at the Dickinson County Community Building.
