Soybean Harvest Nears Completion

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Worse than we first thought. That’s how one local ag official sums up yields in the local soybean harvest.

Paul Kassel, a Crops Specialist with the Iowa State University Extension Service, says a combination of the dry weather and an outbreak of soybean aphids are to blame. Most yields are in the upper 20’s to lower 30’s bushels per acre. Normally they’re atleast double that.

Kassel is a little more optimistic when it comes to the corn harvest, which is just getting a good start. He says those yields should be quite a bit better because the corn wasn’t as subject to the dry conditions and pests.
