(Spirit Lake)– County Treasurers across Iowa are reminding residents of action taken by the Iowa Legislature in 2021 that expanded property tax assistance to those 70 and older. Those who are eligible have until June 1st, 2023, to apply. Claims are based on 2022 household income, which must be less than 250 percent of the federal poverty level.
Dickinson County Treasurer Kris Rowley says if you’ve already submitted an Elderly and Disabled tax claim for this year, it will be considered for both the property tax freeze and the property tax credit. She says the baseline will be established if you are 70 or older and meet the income guidelines.
To establish the tax freeze that will become available with the September 2023/March 2024 property taxes, a claimant must have been 70 or older by December 31st, 2022 with a maximum household income in 2022 of less than 250 percent of the federal poverty level.
Claim forms are available at County Treasurer’s offices throughout Iowa and are also available at the Dickinson County website at dickinsoncountyiowa.gov/treasurer.
