(Spirit Lake)– Two men escaped serious injury Thursday evening in a snowmobile accident under the highways nine and 71 bridge on the east side of Spirit Lake on East Lake Okoboji.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources tells KUOO news 28-year-old Jason Thomas of Spirit Lake was northbound and 33-year-old Jon Danbom of Milford was southbound when the two collided head-on.
Officials say the two had been running across open water when the crash occurred. Each driver thought the other was waiting on the other side for him to cross.
Neither driver sustained injury requiring immediate attention.
Both sleds sustained major damage and had to be retrieved by the Okoboji Underwater Search and Rescue Unit. The Spirit Lake Fire Department and Dickinson County Ambulance stood by as a precaution while the recovery operation took place.
The D-N-R was also assisted by the Spirit Lake Police Department.
The incident took place around 8:00 p.m.
