SMU Trustees Approve Water Rate Increase

November 23, 2014

(Spencer)– Spencer residents will soon be paying more for water.

The board of trustees of Spencer Municipal Utilities has approved a rate increase that will be effective this coming June 1st.

Customers will begin seeing a 10-dollar monthly customer charge on their bills beginning at that time.

In addition, SMU is eliminating the minimum charge for customer usage. The rate for usage up to 100-thousand gallons meanwhile will increase to $2.75 per thousand while usage over 100,000 will increase to $2.15 per thousand gallons beginning on the July statements for usage during June.

Customers who have outside water metered separately will see that rate increase to $3.90 per thousand…also beginning on the July statement.

SMU officials say the increase is needed to pay for repairs and maintenance as well as to finance upcoming construction projects on the distribution system and to replace a dome on the finished water tank, which is scheduled for this year.
