SMU Customers To See Increase In Electric Rates

November 23, 2014

(Spencer)– Spencer Municipal Utility electric customers will soon see an increase in rates.

The utility’s board of trustees have voted unanimously to adopt the increase…amounting to about eight and-a-half percent for residential customers. It’s effective with consumption beginning on June 18th. General service commercial customers will see their rates increase by nine and-a-half percent; while the rate for general service commercial energy and demand will go up by four percent.

SMU Information Director Curtis Dean says this will be the first increase in rates in 21 years.

Dean says a reduction in the amount of power being made available through the Western Area Power Administration means utilities have to buy from other more expensive sources…increasing the cost of doing business.
