SL Woman Escapes Injury After Driving Car Into Little Sioux River

(Spencer)– A close call for a Spirit Lake woman who drove her car into the Little Sioux River in Spencer Saturday.

Spencer police say the incident took place around 2:00 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of 11th Street Southeast and St. Luke Drive in southeast Spencer.

Heather Bern of Spirit Lake was westbound on 11th Street Southeast when she became distracted while looking in her rear-view mirror. The vehicle left the road to the right, traveled down a steep embankment and plunged into the Little Sioux River.

The car was completely immersed, but Bern was able to get out and made it safely to shore.

The 1996 Saturn Bern was driving sustained 4,500-dollars in damage.

No charges were filed.
