(Spirit Lake)– Demolition of the old water tower near the Spirit Lake High School has been bumped up.
City Administrator Mark Stevens says the contractor on the project, Isler Demolition of Romeo, Michigan, announced it will take the tower down tomorrow (Wed.). The tower had earlier been scheduled for demolition August 25th.
The 300,000 gallon tower was constructed in 1958 at a cost of 59-thousand dollars.
The Indian head painted on the west face of the tower will be preserved and given to the Spirit Lake School District.
The tower became obsolete when the city constructed the new 1.5 million gallon water tower on 36th Street in 2007. The old tower was kept in operation during the expansion of the water treatment plant in the event there was a need for additional storage capacity.
For safety reasons, most of the area immediately surrounding the tower will not be accessible Wednesday. The tennis courts, little league fields, the east driveway off Erie Avenue and the east parking lot at the high school will be blocked off.
The best place for observers to watch the demolition would be from 28th Street or Hill Avenue.
