(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake school board Monday evening set the district’s proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year. It has a levy of $10.46 per thousand dollars valuation…compared with $10.99 currently. A public hearing will be held at the board’s regular meeting next month.
The board also reviewed a report from a recent visit by the Department of Education. Board members were updated on actions being taken to correct deficiencies listed in the report. Most of them deal with teacher licensure.
The board also approved a new two-year contract with teachers. It includes a 4.26 percent salary increase for the 2003-2004 school year and a 4.2 percent hike for the 2004-2005 school year. The teachers have already ratified the pact.
The board also accepted the early retirement resignation of Penny Wiersma effective this coming December. Wiersma is stepping down as secrectary at the Administrative Office after 23 years.
