SL School Board Identifies More Building Projects

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– As construction on the elementary project nears completion and the high school expansion is well underway, the Spirit Lake school board Monday evening met with its building committee to look at additional needs. Another 12 million dollars in projects were identified. They include (in no particular order) a 706 seat auditorium with an estimated cost of 3.6 to 3.8 million; a new two or three section gym (estimated cost of 2.2 million for two sections; 3.7 million for three); remodeling lockerrooms and weight/fitness room estimated at 1.1 million; an addition of either four or six classrooms at the middle school (est. cost of 1.7 million for six or 1.5 million for four); a multi-purpose room at the elementary at an estimated cost of 1.5 million; and updating the mechanical system at the high school…estimated at 500-thousand dollars.

The School Board took no action on what project(s) to proceed with next or financing. A voter-approved increase in the Physical Plant and Equipment Levy and/or a bond issue would be needed in addition to local option sales tax proceeds.

The board will discuss the matter more at its meeting next month.
