(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake school board voted unanimously Monday to seek bonding to help finance the gymnasium and Sami Center Performing Arts Center at the high school.
The board voted to borrow 6.2 million dollars for now with a cap set at 6.835 million.
Of that, 200-thousand dollars will be allocated for now to the Sami Center project to provide a grid iron and for special flooring in the multi-purpose room. Another 200-thousand will go immediately to the gymnasium committee for a redesign that would allow for a facility with 1,590 seats.
Superintendent Tim Grieves says the borrowing will be arranged through five local financial institutions.
On another matter, Grieves again the warned the board Monday evening about the potential for 200-thousand dollars in budget cuts that may need to be made in the upcoming school year. Even with the cuts, Grieves says the district will still be looking at an increase in the tax levy. He says for the first time in 10 years the tax asking in the Spirit Lake school district will probably surpasse $11.00 per thousand dollars of valuation. The rate currently is $10.97.
