(Spirit Lake)– Bills for the purchase of two used cars for the police department were a topic of discussion at Tuesday’s Spirit Lake City Council meeting.
The issue surfaced when council member Barb Ricke had the bills pulled from the consent agenda.
One of the vehicles had already been purchased; the other was in the process of being purchased on the internet.
Ricke questioned the purchases and wondered why they were allowed…saying they were not included in the department’s budget.
City Administrator Pete Hegeman said he authorized the purchases, saying the vehicles were intended to replace existing ones that had high mileage and were requiring a lot of expensive maintenance.
Ricke then made a motion directing Hegeman to stop the purchase. It died for lack of a second. Councilman Terry Yarns then made a motion to pay for the vehicles. It also died for lack of a second.
