(Des Moines)– Officials with the Iowa Department of Corrections say a Spirit Lake man imprisoned at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison has died.
Spokesman Fred Scaletta says 23-year-old Jeffrey Wittler died over the weekend.
Wittler was charged in 2009 with attempted murder and other felony charges in an incident involving his mother. He was later convicted of lesser charges of willful injury and going armed with intent.
His mother, Bev Wittler, tells KUOO news she has extreme compassion for her son, who she says was going through some emotional issues.
