(Spirit Lake)– A Spirit Lake man has been charged with attempted murder as the result of a stabbing Friday evening at the Center Lake Village Trailer Court.
Spirit Lake police were called to a report of a disturbance at lot 78 shortly before 8:30 p.m. Upon arriving, officers were advised by the caller who was standing outside the residence that there was a male armed with a knife in the back bedroom with a female. Officers entered the residence and detained a male subject later identified as 29-year-old Shwan Aric Aeilts of Spirit Lake.
During the investigation officers discovered the incident began at lot 11 about 20 minutes earlier where Aeilts reportedly assaulted and choked his ex-girlfriend and threatened her with a knife over a recent relationship break-up. The victim was able to leave her residence and ran to lot 78 for help. Aeilts followed her to that location, where a male resident told Aeilts to leave. Aeilts left, but returned a short time later. Aeilts entered the residence and a struggle began over a knife. During the struggle the resident, 38-year-old Luis Humberto Mendez-Flores of Spirit Lake was stabbed in the upper right leg; Aeilts received a minor stab wound to his lower right leg. Aeilts was then able to get the knife and went to a back bedroom where the female victim was. Officers then arrived and took Aeilts into custody without incident.
Aeilts was arrested and charged with two counts of attempt to commit murder…each a class “B” felony; burglary in the first degree…also a class “B” felony; assault while participating in a felony…a class “C” felony; and domestic abuse/assault and displaying a weapon…an aggravated misdemeanor. He was booked into the Dickinson county jail.
