SL Man Accused Of Stealing Vehicle; Getting Into Accidents With It

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A Spirit Lake man is accused of stealing a vehicle from an Okoboji business, then getting into several accidents with it.

Spirit Lake police say they were called to the scene of a mishap shortly before 7:20 this (Thursday) morning on Highways nine and 71 just west of Peoria Avenue. Authorities say a vehicle driven by 26-year-old WIlfred Sophus of Spirit Lake collided with another vehicle at that location.

Upon further investigation authorities determined Sophus had allegedly been involved in two other crashes that had occurred just minutes prior. Authorities say the vehicle Sophus was operating, a 1988 Buick, was allegedly stolen from an Okoboji business.

Sophus was taken by ambulance to Lakes Regional Healthcare where he was treated and released. He was then booked into the Dickinson county jail on charges of second degree theft…a class “D” felony; three counts of reckless driving, operating while intoxicated, no driver’s license, failure to yield half of the roadway, two counts of following too close and no insurance.

The Spirit Lake and Okoboji Police Departments continue to investigate the incidents.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office assisted with traffic control.
