SL Firefighters Contend With Blizzard While Fighting House Fire

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Spirit Lake firefighters had to brave the elements as they battled a house fire early this (Saturday) morning.

Fire Chief Wally Jorgenson says they were called to the Jason Agre residence just west of the Wild Rose on County Farm Road around 3:40 a.m.

Jorgenson says the structure was already fully engulfed when firefighters arrived.

No injuries were reported as no one was home at the time. Jorgenson says the house was just recently constructed and the owners hadn’t moved in yet.

There was severe lightning in the area late last night, but it’s not certain if it was the cause of the blaze. The State Fire Marshall is investigating.

Firefighters had to battle blizzard conditions and a 35 degree below zero wind chill.

The structure was pretty much destroyed by the fire.

The Spirit Lake Fire Department was assisted by the Arnolds Park-Okoboji Fire Department, Dickinson County Ambulance and the Iowa Department Transportation which provided plows to open Highway 71 so firefighters could transport water.

Firefighters were at the scene slightly more than three hours.
