SL Firefighters Battle Large Grass Fire

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A large grass fire southwest of Spirit Lake Thursday scorched quite a bit of land and threatened to get close to some homes, the Lakes Art Center, Oak Haven Care Facility and Kenue Park.

Spirit Lake Fire Chief Wally Jorgenson says firefighters were called to 2309 170th Street north of the Lakes Art Center around 12:30 p.m.

Jorgenson says at one point the blaze was threatening to spread toward the Lakes Art Center and the old county farm. Fortunately the wind was light and crews were able to contain the blaze and keep it from going into the adjoining areas.

Jorgenson says it appears the blaze was the result of a leaf fire that got out of control. The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating, and Jorgenson says there’s a possibility of charges being filed against the person that lit the fire.

A burning ban remains in effect in Dickinson county until further notice.

Firefighters were called back to the scene around 5:30 p.m. Thursday to extinguish a flareup.
