SL Council Tables Action On Hog Lot Resolution

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake City Council Tuesday evening tabled action on a resolution opposing the placement of large feedlots in environmentally sensitive areas, or near highly populated areas, in Dickinson county.

Council member Pat McNorton has been urging the council to adopt the resolution, saying it sends a strong message to legislators and others. But another council member, Bob Cosens, says passing such a resolution right now is premature. He says the city should wait to see what action the legislature takes to increase local control. Fellow council member Terry Yarns said it’s important the environment be protected, but that a balance must be struck. He says caution must be taken not to drive livestock agriculture out of Iowa.

After further discussion, the council voted to form a committee to review wording of the resolution, to see if they can come up with language everyone might be agreeable with.
