(Spirit Lake)– It looks like a Planned Unit Development proposed for Spirit Lake now won’t get off the drawing board.
Roger Wheeler had proposed to construct a vacation rental townhouse complex east of the Oaks Motel on East Lake Okoboji. The proposal drew opposition from neighbors concerned about traffic, noise, possible affects on the lake, and other issues.
Meeting in special session Monday evening, the Spirit Lake city council voted five-to-nothing to recommend the Board of Adjustment reject the proposed project.
Wheeler wasn’t present at Monday evening’s meeting. Council members said they had been contacted by him and were told he would probably drop the plans if he didn’t get a favorable vote from the council.
The city’s Board of Adjustment met prior to the city council Monday evening. That meeting was adjourned almost as quickly as it was convened due to a lack of a recommendation from the council at that time. The Board of Adjustment will now meet at 5:30 p.m. Monday, April 26th to consider the council’s recommendation.
