SL Council Discusses Proposed Improvements To Hwys. 9 & 71

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake city council anticipates major improvements to the Highway nine corridor through town in the next few years.

The Iowa Department of Transportation plans to re-surface the road from Highway 86 east to the bridge over East Lake Okoboji next year.

The city is thinking about extending curb and gutter from where it currently leaves off at Peoria Avenue near Hy-Vee west to Hudson Avenue-the Great Lakes G-M Toyota corner. They’re also thinking about extending street lighting from the Highways Nine and 71 intersection west to the west city limits at Indian Hills Golf Course.

Public Works Director Todd Dolphin pegs the proposed improvements at about three million dollars.

Dolphin says the resurfacing will be the first major work done to Highways nine and 71 through Spirit Lake since 1955.
