SL Council Discusses Downtown Parking Issues

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Parking in the downtown area was a topic of discussion at Tuesday’s Spirit Lake city council meeting.

Concerned that a two-hour limit is causing problems for hairdressers and their customers, councilman Jerry Harbst suggested the limit be increased to three hours. But businessman Steve Balm urged the council not to amend the ordinance, saying the two-hour limit is fine. Balm says the ordinance, which is enforced whenever complaints arise, is working fine. He says the biggest violators are employees who are taking up spaces an entire day at a time.

The council took no action on the matter. It will likely be referred to the city’s Street Committee. A meeting with business owners may also be in the works.

In other business the council voted three-to-two to enter into an agreement with the Howard R. Green engineering firm to map the city’s infrastructure at a cost of 23,500-dollars. Council members Jerry Harbst and Kevin Bice cast the no votes.

The council also voted NOT to amend a resolution that would have allowed for the placement of a public dock at the end of 18th Street.
