SL Council Denies

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– When the city of Spirit Lake committed a million dollars to help construct the Bedell Family YMCA it got an agreement that it would not offer personalized training for two years after its opening, so it wouldn’t compete with local for-profit businesses already offering that service. Camp Foster YMCA Director Brian Peterson asked the council Tuesday if it would shorten the restriction by a year, estimating nine out of 10 “Y” members are requesting personalized training.

“Not so fast” says Cardio Plus owner Dan Tryon, who told the council a current expansion of his business is being made as a survival tactic, not as sign his membership is growing.

“Curves For Women” owner Brian Bailey says that firm has been negatively impacted by the “Y” as well.

The council agreed a deal is a deal and told the Bedell Family YMCA it will have to abide by the two-year moratorium on personal training. That means the “Y” will have to wait until December of 2006 before it can offer the service.
