SL Council Awards Bid On Project That’s The Focus Of A Lawsuit

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake City Council Tuesday took another step forward with plans to extend water and sewer to a newly annexed area along Highway 71 south…even though the city is involved in a legal dispute with Clay Regional Water over who has rights to serve that area. The council awarded a bid of 630,725-dollars to H & W Contracting of Sioux Falls to extend water and sewer lines. The bid came in under the engineer’s estimate of 691-thousand dollars.

In other business, the council decided to pay a 4,500-dollar bill for roof replacements on the six dugouts at Little League Park. They were damaged in last summer’s hail storm. The council decided to pay the bill even though the Spirit Lake Youth Association didn’t approach the city before the roofs were fixed. They were not covered by insurance. SLYA representative Randy Magg said they knew the work had to be done anyway and the thought of approaching the city didn’t come until after the fact.

On a vote of four-to-one, the council also Tuesday approved a Planning and Zoning Commission recommendation to rezone 1702 Lincoln Avenue from Highway Commercial to General Commercial. The owner, Joe Vanderlaan of JVL Corporation, plans to construct a showroom on the site. Councilman Bob Cosens cast the lone dissenting vote.
